Urgent recall for three tomato sauces that may cause 'fatal' food poisoning

Urgent Recall Issued for Three Tomato Sauces Linked to Food Poisoning Risk

Shoppers have been alerted that consuming certain jars of tomato sauce may pose a serious, potentially fatal health risk. First and Last Bakery, LLC, a company based in Connecticut, has announced an urgent recall of three of its popular tomato-based pasta sauces due to the possible presence of Clostridium botulinum bacteria, which cause botulism.

Details of the Recall

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated that the affected sauces were produced without an approved manufacturing schedule. This means that the process was not adequately reviewed to ensure safety against the growth of the dangerous bacterium.

The recalled products were distributed between Connecticut and Massachusetts through Big Y and possibly other retailers beginning September 22, 2025. All affected jars display a "use by" date of September 26.

Health Advisory from the FDA

The FDA advises that anyone who purchased these products should not consume them and should return the jars to the store of purchase for a full refund.

Although no cases of illness have been reported, botulism can be life-threatening if untreated. It results from toxins produced by *Clostridium botulinum* when foods with low or improper acidity are not processed correctly.

Understanding the Risk

Botulism is a rare but dangerous condition that can cause paralysis and even death. Preventive measures include proper food handling and following approved canning procedures to inhibit bacterial growth.

Author’s summary: The recall emphasizes the importance of strict safety controls in food production, as even small oversights in processing tomato sauces can lead to deadly contamination risks.
