Outfielder Leody Taveras is expected to join the Baltimore Orioles on a one-year, $2 million contract, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, who credited Mike Rodriguez for first reporting the agreement.
Seattle designated Taveras for assignment in mid-June. After clearing waivers, he was sent outright to Triple-A Tacoma. The Mariners had previously claimed him off waivers from the Texas Rangers in early May, and Taveras later chose free agency.
Taveras played the last five major league seasons with the Rangers, debuting in 2020 as a part-time outfielder. While his early offensive numbers were modest, he stood out for his defensive range in center field and solid speed on the bases. In 2023, he emerged as a regular player, appearing in 143 games.
Over his first three seasons, Taveras accumulated 660 plate appearances from 2020 to 2022 and recorded 554 in 2023. That year, he logged 14 home runs, 14 stolen bases, and a .266/.312/.421 slash line. His strong showing secured him a steady role in 2024, though his offensive performance declined. In 529 plate appearances, he posted an 84 wRC+, hit .229, but stole a career-best 23 bases.
Before the 2024 season, Taveras became arbitration eligible due to his Super Two status. He and Texas agreed on a $4.75 million salary for 2025, though luxury tax concerns sparked trade speculation. The Rangers ultimately retained him, but he continued to struggle offensively, finishing with a .241/.259 batting line before his release.
“Outfielder Leody Taveras is expected to sign with the Baltimore Orioles,” reported Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
Author’s Summary: Leody Taveras, a speedy outfielder noted for his defense, joins the Baltimore Orioles on a $2 million deal after a challenging 2024 season with the Rangers and Mariners.
