Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum urged lawmakers to classify sexual harassment as a crime nationwide after she was groped by an intoxicated man while greeting supporters near the presidential palace on Tuesday.
The 63-year-old president was walking toward a public event in Mexico City when a man approached her, placed an arm around her shoulder, and inappropriately touched her before a security officer intervened. The incident highlighted persistent issues surrounding women's safety in the country.
"This person approached, completely intoxicated (...) it wasn't until I saw the videos later that I realized what had really happened," Sheinbaum said Wednesday.
The suspect was later detained, and the president’s office confirmed to Agence France-Presse (AFP) that he has been charged with harassment — an offense currently recognized in Mexico City and around 20 other states.
After being assaulted in public, President Claudia Sheinbaum demanded nationwide laws to criminalize sexual harassment, emphasizing Mexico’s struggle with protecting women’s safety.
