Residents of Paris have a unique opportunity to win burial spots in the world-renowned cemeteries of Père-Lachaise, Montparnasse, and Montmartre. The city has introduced this lottery as part of a project aimed at restoring historic funerary monuments.
The lottery offers Parisians the chance to be buried near some of history's famous figures, such as Jim Morrison of The Doors, writer Oscar Wilde, and French singer Edith Piaf.
The city is offering ten gravestones in need of repair at each cemetery for €4,000 (£3,500) each. Buyers must commit to restoring the monuments and acquire a burial plot adjacent to the gravestone.
The Paris council described the scheme as "a compromise between respecting the dead and giving residents a chance to be buried within the city."
The city hopes this newly approved initiative will help repair and preserve the monuments in these historic burial grounds while providing burial opportunities to residents.
The restoration programme was unanimously approved by the Paris council in April.
