Filmmaker Dan Trachtenberg, best known for revitalizing the Predator franchise, recently shared his thoughts on revisiting Kevin Costner’s 1995 cult sci-fi film Waterworld. Ahead of the theatrical release of Predator: Badlands, Trachtenberg discussed his vision for continuing the story in an unexpected format.
Speaking on the red carpet during the premiere, the director explained that instead of rebooting or producing another movie, he’d like to see Waterworld evolve into a modern video game experience.
"The thing about Waterworld that I want to see is a video game. I want to see an open-world third-person action-adventure video game that is not a remake of the movie, but is a sequel to the movie. That's what I want to see."
Trachtenberg’s vision echoes previous examples where video games have extended the legacy of beloved films. One notable case is Ghostbusters: The Video Game (2009), which continued the story two years after the events of Ghostbusters II. That title placed players in the shoes of a new recruit working alongside the iconic team to tackle paranormal threats across New York City.
By proposing a game-based sequel, Trachtenberg suggests a fresh and interactive path for expanding Waterworld’s universe—a way to reimagine the story for audiences more engaged with gaming than film reboots.
Dan Trachtenberg envisions the universe of Waterworld reborn as an open-world action game, merging cinematic storytelling with interactive exploration.
