Willmott Dixon has begun construction on a new building at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, marking the start of the first Wave 1 scheme in the government's new hospital programme.
The £140m project, procured with Mace, will replace the hospital's 50-year-old emergency department with a four-storey extension, expected to transform urgent and emergency care provision in the southwest peninsula.
"This represents not just the beginning of a building, but the next step in enhancing the care and wellbeing of thousands of patients every year" - Rob Woolcock, director at Willmott Dixon.
