Despite the box office disappointment of The Marvels, Brie Larson appears to be returning as Captain Marvel in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. Fans previously believed Larson would not reprise her role in the MCU, but recent sightings suggest otherwise.
In her recent Instagram story, Larson was seen voting at the Statewide Special Election, wearing a wing accessory resembling that of Carol Danvers, her superhero character, which has ignited rumors about last-minute decisions to bring her back in the film.
The Marvels struggled financially, but Larson’s return contrasts with the absence of the Eternals characters, who have yet to reappear despite their own disappointing box office results.
The Eternals earned $400 million against a $200 million budget before marketing costs, marking a clear shortfall. Its lukewarm critical reception and unclear narrative direction contributed to its underwhelming impact on audiences.
“Since it was just after the release of Endgame, it had a free rein to experiment with what could and couldn’t stick for the superhero ensemble,” said director Chloé Zhao in a Vanity Fair interview.
Brie Larson’s surprising possible comeback in Avengers: Doomsday highlights ongoing shifts in Marvel’s character focus following mixed results from their recent films.
Author's note: The MCU continues to adjust its roster, favoring returns despite past box office struggles, reflecting evolving strategies in superhero storytelling.
