The President and the Governor of Idaho have the authority to order U.S. and State of Idaho flags to be flown at half-staff on designated occasions within Idaho.

Flags are flown at half-staff in honor of the passing of former Vice President Dick Cheney.

Relevant Law: Title 4, United States Code, Chapter 1
- The flag shall be flown at half-staff for 30 days after the death of a President or former President.
- Flags are lowered for 10 days following the death of the Vice President, Chief Justice or retired Chief Justice of the United States, or the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
- From the day of death until interment, the flag is at half-staff for an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, a Secretary of an executive or military department, a former Vice President, or a Governor of a State, territory, or possession.
- For a Member of Congress, the flag is lowered on the day of death and the following day.
