Manchester United youngster James Overy has earned a surprise call-up to the Australia national team for upcoming friendlies against Venezuela and Colombia. Socceroos manager Tony Popovic has introduced 11 new players to the squad, with Overy among the fresh talents set to make an impact following his strong performances at the U20 World Cup.
Overy, who turns 18 this weekend, joined Manchester United in the summer of 2024 on a scholarship before signing a professional contract in July. Shortly after his arrival, he suffered an eight-month injury layoff but returned to action with the Under-18s in February, according to the Manchester Evening News.
“It’s been really hard for James because obviously he’s made the move from Australia and he’s a terrific lad, first of all,” said Adam Lawrence, former Under-18s manager, on Overy’s resilience after injury.
Overy’s rapid rise marks him as one of the most promising young talents within both Manchester United and Australian football.
James Overy’s resilience and talent have fast-tracked him from injury setbacks to an Australia senior team call-up, highlighting his promising future in football.
