“Good teams find a way to play great teams and win.” The Peterborough Petes faced the country's best team and proved they can come out on top. On Thursday night, the Petes broke an 11-game losing streak versus the CHL’s No. 1 ranked and OHL-leading Brantford Bulldogs.
Adam Novotny scored his second goal with 1:28 remaining in overtime, securing a 4-3 victory before 2,723 fans at the Memorial Centre. This marked the Petes' first win over Brantford, who held a 13-0-3-1 record and had earned points in all 17 games that season.
The game tightened after the Petes gave up a tying goal with 52.6 seconds left in regulation during a Brantford power play and six-on-four advantage caused by a Petes penalty for too many men on the ice. The Petes responded when Aiden Young, who recorded three points, won a battle along the wall and passed the puck to Genc Ula, sparking a two-on-one rush. Novotny finished it by firing a shot past Bulldogs’ goalie Ryerson Leanders.
With this win, the Petes improved their record to 8-7-1-1 overall, including 6-2-0-1 at home.
“Our team was so great,” said Novotny, who leads the Petes with 10 goals and 17 points. “We stayed together the whole time. I think we were the better team today.”
The Petes benefited from a strong performance by goalie Easton Rye and outshot Brantford 35-33, never trailing during the game.
“Our compete tonight was outstanding,” said Petes head coach Rob Wilson. “We held them to five shots in the first period. Then you know you’re going to have a barrage coming and we weathered the storm.”
Summary: The Peterborough Petes demonstrated resilience and teamwork by snapping a long losing streak against the top-ranked Brantford Bulldogs with a thrilling overtime victory.
