A 35-year-old man intentionally drove into a group of pedestrians and cyclists on Île d’Oléron, injuring ten people, four of them critically. The incident took place around 8:45 a.m. between Dolus-d’Oléron and Saint-Pierre-d’Oléron.
He shouted “Allahu Akbar” before accelerating into the crowd.
According to witnesses, the man yelled this phrase before driving his vehicle into people. After the impact, he attempted to set his car on fire using gas cylinders, but police subdued him with a taser and arrested him without further resistance.
“He was neutralized using an electric pulse weapon,” the prosecutor confirmed.
Authorities stated that the suspect was previously known for minor thefts but was not on the national ‘S’ watchlist for high-risk individuals. Prosecutors have launched an investigation into attempted murder with terrorist intent.
