Canada Post Begins Layoffs Amid CUPW Mediation

Canada Post has started layoffs as part of its ongoing restructuring efforts while continuing mediation talks with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW).

Mediation Resumes After Pause

On October 30, CUPW negotiators for both postal bargaining units met with Canada Post and federal mediators for the first time since early October. The union aims to revive negotiations to reach a resolution.

The parties plan additional discussions in the coming days, according to a CUPW news release.

Continued Strike Actions

Meanwhile, CUPW members maintain rotating strikes. In Quebec, workers have escalated their protest by refusing to handle and deliver unaddressed flyers, known as Neighbourhood Mail.

“We all have a part to play in our fight for public services, good jobs and a sustainable public post office. The negotiators thank all members for their continued support,” said Jan Simpson, CUPW National President.

Government Readiness for Job Cuts

Joël Lightbound, Minister of Government Transformation, Public Works and Procurement, who oversees Canada Post, expressed readiness to permit significant job reductions. Experts estimate that up to 10,000 jobs could be eliminated at the Crown Corporation.

This statement came during testimony before the Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates this week.

Summary

Canada Post's restructuring, including planned significant layoffs, proceeds alongside ongoing mediation with CUPW amid continued union strike actions and government involvement.
