Donald Trump's White House strongly condemned the BBC following revelations about a manipulated video in a Panorama episode.
Michael Prescott, a former independent external adviser to the BBC's Editorial Guidelines and Standards Committee (EGSC), disclosed in a leaked memo how the broadcaster 'doctored' a speech by Trump. The altered footage made it appear that Trump encouraged the Capitol Hill riots.
"The 'mangled' excerpt 'completely misled' viewers, showing the president telling supporters he was going to walk to the Capitol with them to 'fight like hell', when he actually said he would walk with them 'to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard'."
Prescott warned the BBC Board last month with a detailed internal dossier after his previous cautions to the standards watchdog were repeatedly dismissed or ignored.
Karoline Leavitt, Trump’s press secretary, publicly condemned the clip as false, calling it:
"100 per cent fake news"
This controversy has intensified international scrutiny on BBC executives Tim Davie and Deborah Turness to address the issue.
This scandal highlights concerns over journalistic integrity as the BBC faces accusations of deliberately misrepresenting a presidential speech.
