Jay Som is the project of Melina Duterte, a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer. Her upcoming album, Belong, will be released on November 7. Ahead of its debut, she unveiled the track “Past Lives,” featuring Hayley Williams of Paramore.
The artists met in Nashville to work together, alongside producer Steph Marziano. Williams’ delicate harmonies on the sweeping “Past Lives” echo a feeling of floating between melancholy and movement, finding drive only to see it fade. The song’s subdued midsection feels like an inner confrontation, balancing power and vulnerability.
“It’s a dream come true to have Hayley sing on my first feature on an album before recording ‘Float.’ I still can’t believe it happened,” Duterte said about the collaboration. “She’s one of the kindest artists out there. She uplifts those around her, and we’re all lucky to share a timeline with her.”
Belong features contributions from Joao Gonzalez of Soft Glas, Mal Hauser of Mk.gee and Illuminati Hotties, Steph Marziano (known for her work with Vundabar, Hot Wax, and Sir Chloe), and Kyle Pulley. For the first time, Duterte invited guest vocalists to appear across the record.
