Sam Smith reveals childhood bullying led to drastic move

Sam Smith Shares Childhood Bullying Experience

English singer Sam Smith has revealed that constant bullying during their childhood led to a significant decision at just 13 years old. The 33-year-old artist, who uses they/them pronouns, shared their experience with teasing and its impact on their life.

Undergoing Surgery Due to Bullying

During an interview on Penn Badgley’s Podcrushed podcast, Smith explained the reasons behind a surgery they had in early adolescence.

“I had surgery on my chest when I was 13-years-old, because I had a growing chest,” they said. “There were all sorts of reasons why, but mainly, I was just getting so teased, I couldn’t go swimming in school, and... getting changed in the locker room was hell. So I got liposuction when I was 13-years-old.”

Smith also joked about their childhood habits and appearance, describing themselves as “chubby, round and pink” and admitting to being “addicted to sausage rolls.”

Challenges Growing Up Queer

The singer spoke extensively about the difficulties of growing up queer and the harsh reality of secondary school.

“I was just so obviously gay, and everyone knew before I did. So, secondary school, those first few years were crazy, because everyone was just calling me gay the whole time,” they laughed. “I was very dramatic, I was very sensitive, and I had loads of girlfriends around me. I was all the girls' best gay friend.”

Smith described the school years as “brutal” and acknowledged the discomfort they felt during that time.
