Alex Newhook scored 1:40 into overtime, securing a thrilling 4-3 victory for the Montreal Canadiens against the Ottawa Senators at the Bell Centre on Saturday night.
The Canadiens forced overtime thanks to rookie Ivan Demidov, who tied the game at 17:37 of the third period. Cole Caufield contributed his 10th goal of the season, while Juraj Slafkovsky scored his third goal in as many games, helping Montreal (9-3-0) extend their winning streak to three games.
Nick Suzuki added two assists, extending his career-long point streak to 11 games, which is also currently the longest active streak in the NHL.
Samuel Montembeault made 14 saves in his first start since October.
Late in the second period, the Canadiens had a chance to extend their 2-1 lead when defenceman Lane Hutson was hooked on a breakaway by Stutzle, resulting in a penalty shot awarded to Hutson. However, Ullmark stopped the shot.
The Senators later capitalized through Amadio with 11 seconds left in the period. The goal was initially disallowed due to goaltender interference on Montembeault but was overturned after a successful challenge by Ottawa.
