During LSU's 20-9 loss to No. 4 Alabama, starting quarterback Garrett Nussmeier was benched mid-game for the first time this season. Sophomore Michael Van Buren took over in the third quarter.
Van Buren completed 5 of 11 passes for 52 yards and rushed for 21 yards on four carries, with two sacks negated from his rushing stats.
“I haven’t put that kind of thought into right now,” Wilson said. “Right now, I just want to be there for our players to let them know we’re going to be all right, to pick their heads up and we’re standing by you. Decisions of depth moving forward, we’re not at that stage right now.”
Van Buren came into play after LSU settled for a field goal on the opening drive of the second half. LSU had a first and goal at Alabama's 9-yard line but managed only 1 yard in the next two plays. A delay of game penalty led to LSU taking a timeout before Nussmeier was sacked for a 14-yard loss.
Summary: LSU’s interim coach emphasized support for his quarterbacks over competition talks after benching Garrett Nussmeier during a tough loss to Alabama.
