LSU made a quarterback switch in the third quarter of their Saturday night game against No. 4 Alabama, replacing senior Garrett Nussmeier with sophomore Michael Van Buren.
Van Buren entered the game with LSU trailing 17-6 and 6:26 remaining in the third quarter at Bryant-Denny Stadium. It marked Van Buren’s first appearance this season in a close game scenario.
Before being substituted, Nussmeier had completed 18 of 21 passes for 121 yards, with no touchdowns or interceptions. He had managed to lead LSU into the red zone at the start of the second half.
LSU interim coach Frank Wilson indicated Van Buren might see playing time in specific situations against Alabama.
Until this change, Nussmeier had taken every offensive snap in the game.
