The new Channel 5 drama The Forsytes premiered on Monday, October 20. This fresh adaptation of John Galsworthy's classic Forsyte Saga novels has quickly captured the attention of period drama fans.
The series was written by Debbie Horsfield, known for her work on Poldark. The cast includes Eleanor Tomlinson from Poldark, Susan Hampshire — who first appeared in the 1967 version of The Forsyte Saga — Millie Gibson from Coronation Street, and Joshua Orpin from Home and Away. It also features Tuppence Middleton (Downton Abbey), Stephen Moyer (True Blood), Jack Davenport, and Tom Durant Pritchard (The Crown).
"Family stability is threatened by two chance encounters for rival cousins, Jolyon and Soames, throwing their previously steady lives into disarray.
Married Jolyon contends with the reappearance of his former lover, Louisa, a lady’s maid-turned-dressmaker, while daughter June falls for a penniless architect. Soames, meanwhile, is enchanted by the beautiful and free-spirited dancer Irene.
All must decide whether to be ruled by the head or the heart."
The first episode aired on Monday, October 20 at 9 p.m. on Channel 5. Two episodes have already been broadcast, and viewers are eager for the next installment. The narrative began ten years after Jolyon’s marriage to Frances, as the Forsyte family prepared to celebrate daughter June’s eighteenth birthday and introduction into society.
A lavish new take on Galsworthy’s classic novels, The Forsytes unfolds with family rivalries, forbidden passions, and elegant 1890s drama that continues to captivate viewers each week.
