Nevada Senators Vote to End Shutdown

The Senate took its first step toward ending the government shutdown on Sunday after several moderate Democrats, including Nevada’s Jacky Rosen and Catherine Cortez Masto, agreed to move forward. Their decision came despite the absence of a guaranteed extension for health care subsidies, sparking frustration among Democrats who hoped to keep pushing for the provision.

In a procedural vote, the Senate advanced 60–40 toward passing a compromise bill to fund the government and later revisit the extension of Affordable Care Act tax credits set to expire in January. The final vote may take several more days if objections arise from members of the Democratic caucus.

Democratic leader Chuck Schumer opposed moving forward, along with nearly all Democrats except eight. The agreement does not ensure the continuation of health care subsidies, a key Democratic priority for six weeks of negotiations.

Although Cortez Masto previously supported Republican-led measures to end the shutdown, Rosen had initially opposed them, emphasizing her commitment to stand firm.

“Nevadans didn’t send me to Washington to cave to Republicans,” Rosen said earlier in the debate.

However, the mounting consequences of what became the longest shutdown in American history prompted both senators to support the current proposal.
