Spence Gets 2 Points in 4-2 Win Over Utah

Also known as the Leevi Merilainen redemption game. The Senators have given fans many reasons to worry this season — from the coaching staff’s decision not to use Jordan Spence, to inconsistent goaltending, and the team’s general inability to capitalize on chances or close out games in regulation. However, tonight’s 4-2 victory over the Utah Mammoth helped to ease some of those concerns.

It wasn’t the Sens’ sharpest or most dominant win, but it was encouraging. They earned it through solid performances from Spence and Merilainen, along with persistence in attacking the net — an important sign of progress for the roster.

Slow Start and Early Chances

Both teams looked fatigued in the opening minutes, showing signs of playing on the second night of a back-to-back. The pace lacked urgency, and neither goalie faced heavy pressure early on. Ottawa gained some zone time around the five-minute mark but remained mostly on the outside.

Shortly after, Merilainen came up with a big save to keep the score even. The first penalties arrived around nine minutes in, resulting in offsetting minors and a stretch of 4-on-4 hockey. Utah nearly converted immediately, while Ottawa struggled to generate offense, continuing their special teams frustrations even in open ice.

Momentum Shift and Opening Goal

Fortunately, Merilainen stayed sharp, and the Sens began to tilt the ice in their favor. Shane Pinto fired a shot on net, Ridly Greig battled hard in front, and after several deflections off Utah players, the puck found its way across the goal line.

From there, Ottawa maintained composure and built on their lead, ultimately securing a well-earned 4-2 win.
