Fiction Highlights

Louise Penny’s 20th Chief Inspector Gamache mystery, The Black Wolf, ranks #2 on the hardcover fiction list. Our starred review described it as “exemplary.” In March, Penny, a Canadian author, canceled a U.S. tour due to “the ongoing threat of an unprovoked trade war” and “other things the U.S. president is doing that make visiting the U.S. unpalatable.” Nevertheless, to show cross-border solidarity, she concluded her Canadian appearances with two sold-out events at the Haskell Free Library & Opera House, located on the border of Vermont and Quebec.

Manga and Trade Paperbacks

At #6 on the trade paperback list is volume six of The Summer Hikaru Died, a coming-of-age horror manga series with queer themes by Eisner-nominated creator Mokumokuren. Yen Press began publishing English translations in 2023, and the anime adaptation started airing on Netflix in July.

Nonfiction and Cookbooks

Ree Drummond returns with The Pioneer Woman Cooks: The Essential Recipes, which holds the #1 spot on the hardcover nonfiction list. This is her ninth cookbook and confirms her broad appeal. Her previous collection, The Pioneer Woman Cooks: Dinner’s Ready!, has sold nearly 304,000 print copies since its release two years ago.

“The ongoing threat of an unprovoked trade war” and “other things the U.S. president is doing that make visiting the U.S. unpalatable.” — Louise Penny

Toni Chapman’s latest work and further bestseller details are noted but incomplete in this summary.

Author’s summary: Louise Penny’s latest mystery and Ree Drummond's new cookbook top bestseller lists, while the manga The Summer Hikaru Died gains recognition amid adaptations and growing audiences.
