Germantown, Maryland-based startup Whisker Labs has launched a free tool that provides real-time alerts on power outages and electrical fire risks across the United States. Utilizing data from its widespread network of smart home sensors, the company offers early warnings, sometimes even before utility companies become aware of issues.
Anyone can access the outage data by logging into Whisker Labs' Ting app, which features an interactive national outage map displaying nearby incidents without needing a sensor device. This tool helps users identify if their area is affected and monitors when power is restored.
“This data is one of a kind,” CEO Bob Marshall told Technical.ly. “Utilities don’t even know, for the most part, until people call them that the power is out in a neighborhood.”
Marshall emphasized the importance of sharing such information to improve public safety, especially as electrical grids face increasing strain. According to a 2024 Climate Central report, the US has experienced double the number of power disruptions in the past decade compared to the previous one.
“If you’ve got medical equipment or you’ve got pets, you need to know when the power is out,” Marshall said, highlighting the tool’s role in helping residents make informed decisions during extreme weather events.
The Ting app offers crucial outage visibility, empowering users with timely information that can be lifesaving during emergencies.
