The Canton of Aargau in Switzerland has launched an online map that highlights the suitability of various geothermal energy applications. This initiative aims to support development and investment projects in the region by providing a clear strategic foundation for the targeted use of geothermal energy.
Geothermal energy, particularly for shallow heat extraction through ground source heat pumps, plays a vital role in promoting a sustainable, secure energy supply and achieving decarbonization goals, with a target of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
Recognizing the favorable geothermal conditions in the canton, the Cantonal Government approved a motion from the Grand Council in March 2022 to create a geothermal register. This register identifies geothermal potential across municipalities in Aargau.
Following this, the Energy Division of the Department of Construction, Transport and Environment collaborated with both internal and external experts to conduct a detailed study on geothermal potential within the canton.
The map establishes a strategic foundation for investments and project developments, thereby promoting the targeted use of geothermal energy in the canton.
You can access the Suitability Map for Geothermal Energy to explore the details.
Overall, this map is a crucial tool for advancing geothermal energy initiatives and enhancing environmental sustainability in Aargau.
