The recent sports betting scandal has shaken Major League Baseball following the indictment of Cleveland Guardians pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz. Federal prosecutors allege that both players were part of an illegal scheme that manipulated pitch outcomes to influence the results of specific bets.
According to the indictment, Clase and Ortiz allegedly collaborated with outside groups to arrange "hundreds of fraudulent bets" on pitch types and outcomes. These actions were meant to ensure financial gain by fixing certain situations during live games.
The accusations include conspiracy to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to manipulate sports contests through bribery, and money laundering. Investigators claim the plan began around May 2023, though not every attempt succeeded.
One notable incident occurred on May 28, 2025, during a game between the Guardians and the Dodgers. Betting records show that Clase and his associates placed roughly $4,000 on a wager predicting the first pitch would be a ball or hit-by-pitch. Clase delivered a pitch low and outside, but Dodgers hitter Andy Pages swung and made contact, voiding the predicted outcome.
“The pitch was supposed to miss the zone, but he swung at it,” said one of the text messages cited in the investigation.
This misfire led to a series of frustrated text exchanges between Clase and one of the gamblers, which prosecutors have since introduced as key evidence in the case.
The Emmanuel Clase betting case exposes how greed and manipulation can damage both careers and the integrity of professional baseball.
