Firefighters Battle Derelict Building Fire in Newquay

A fire broke out in a derelict building in Newquay at around 3:18am, with road closures remaining in place as firefighters work to extinguish the blaze.

Following a similar fire at the Narrowcliff Hotel in July, Cllr Joanne Kenny stated that the Council has limited powers over privately owned properties but can take action if buildings are deemed unsafe or unsightly.

"The risks arising from these closed and privately owned buildings was highlighted at the last Town Council meeting – and I have liaised with Cornwall Council management to see if we could restore the special team we had when Newquay was plagued before by a host of derelict buildings, almost exactly 10 years ago.

Cllr Kenny plans to request the reinstatement of the Cornwall Council team and the Derelict Buildings working party at the August Town Council meeting.
