Poland Spring Reduces Water Pumping Amid Maine's Drought
Maine is experiencing a severe drought, with minimal rainfall and hundreds of wells running dry.
A viewer, Douglas, asked the CBS13 I-Team to investigate if Poland Spring is reducing its water pumping during this period.
The Maine Department of Environmental Protection requires companies with significant groundwater wells to monitor water levels and cut back or halt pumping if levels drop too low.
- The DEP is not aware of any water bottling operations that have been required to reduce or stop withdrawals during this drought.
- Poland Spring has implemented a "significant" reduction in withdrawals at its Clear Spring site in Hollis and other locations across Maine as of September 1.
Poland Spring says it’s already made cutbacks on its own.
