Lansing becomes LGBTQ welcoming city, but stops short of sanctuary status

Lansing Becomes LGBTQ Welcoming City

The city of Lansing has been designated as an LGBTQ Welcoming City after a unanimous vote by City Council members.

The resolution, largely symbolic, calls for the development of pro-LGBTQ policies, inclusive city programs, and the appointment of LGBTQ community members to city boards.

Recognizes that, in the face of inadequate state and federal protections, we must take proactive steps to safeguard our most vulnerable residents.

Advocates note that the resolution was passed amidst escalating threats to the transgender community, including recent alleged threats and racist, homophobic messages in Old Town Lansing.

The designation stops short of the LGBTQ Sanctuary City status that some advocates had requested during a hearing on transgender safety.

Author's summary: Lansing becomes LGBTQ welcoming city with a symbolic resolution.
