Gurney Norman, a renowned Appalachian writer and mentor, has left a lasting legacy in the mountains. Many, including Mindy Miller, director of development and communications at the Housing Development Alliance, consider him an Appalachian treasure.
Gurney Norman, I think that he’s just one of the most significant figures to come out of his Eastern Kentucky. He was somebody who stood tall and was a great voice for this area.
Norman's impact on the community is evident in the lives he touched, including Miller's. She aspired to be a writer and considered Norman one of her heroes. His willingness to speak with her on the phone made her feel important and seen.
