A new local United Way program, Jubilant Birth, is providing financial support to new and expectant mothers. The program pays $1,000 per month, starting before the child's birth and continuing throughout the baby's first year of life.
The goal of the program is to determine if the cash benefit can have real health benefits for both the mother and the baby. According to United Way Chief Impact Officer Claire Reid,
“We’re trying to see if we reduce financial stress during pregnancy, and in the year after the baby’s birthday. Can we improve the mother’s health? Can we improve those indicators of the baby’s health?”
The United Way of the Great Capital Region is implementing this program to support the crucial bonding period between a mother and her newborn baby.
