Kyrgyzstan Court Brands Independent Media ‘Extremist’

Three independent news outlets in Kyrgyzstan, including OCCRP member center Kloop, have been labeled “extremist organizations” by a court, banning their online and social media activity.

A Kyrgyz court ruled that the “information materials” of Temirov Live, Kloop.kg, and Ait Ait Dese, as well as the activities of their founders, were “extremist”.

The court ordered a ban on their online activities, citing the founders, Bolot Temirov and Rinat Tukhvatshin, only by their initials.

This move is the latest escalation of a crackdown on media outlets investigating corruption and criticizing the government.
