Invasive Plant of the Month: English Ivy

English ivy, also known as Hedera helix, is a plant native to Europe, western Asia, and northern Africa, introduced to Canada in the 1800s as an ornamental plant.

Invasive plants, such as English ivy, can have severe consequences, including reducing crop yields, increasing herbicide use, and competing with tree seedlings, ultimately affecting forest regeneration and species diversity.

In Ontario, there are 441 known invasive plant species, the most of all provinces, which can lead to increased costs for farmers, reduced crop values, and negative impacts on human health, such as toxic giant hogweed and wild parsnip.

Recreation areas overrun by invasive plants can become less enjoyable due to issues like increased tick populations, difficulty navigating trails, and decreased wildlife presence.

English ivy can outcompete native vegetation, reducing available resources and affecting ecosystem health.

Author's summary: Invasive English ivy harms ecosystems and human health.
