Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay, a singer from Alabama, has passed away at 78, according to The Associated Press.
A family spokesperson confirmed she died on Sunday at Alive Hospice in Nashville after battling cancer.
Before joining the Grateful Dead in the 1970s, Godchaux-MacKay had a successful career as a session singer in Muscle Shoals and Memphis.
Her voice was featured on classic 1960s hits.
