‘Extensive action’ taken to protect York homes after ‘devastating’ 2000 floods

York Flood Protection Efforts

According to the Environment Agency, "extensive action" has been taken to protect York homes and businesses after the "devastating" floods of 25 years ago.

In November 2000, York experienced some of its worst flooding, with 540 properties flooded and villages cut off after the River Ouse rose to a record 5.4 metres above normal summer levels.

The floods had "devastating impacts in York", said Paul Stockhill, area flood risk manager at the Environment Agency.

Since then, the Environment Agency has worked to ensure homes and businesses at risk of flooding receive the best protection possible.
