A Long Island resident has filed a $60 million lawsuit against the Nassau police for an alleged wrongful arrest at a legislative hearing in 2024.
According to the lawsuit, the plaintiff, Maria Campanelli, 27, of Centereach, suffered a traumatic brain injury, bruising, emotional distress, and other damages after being "manhandled" by Nassau officers at the August 5, 2024, legislative meeting in Mineola.
Police officers assaulted and arrested the wrong suspect while responding to a report of an unruly person at a Nassau County legislature hearing on the Mask Transparency Act last year.
The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Central Islip, seeks $60 million in damages.
