Mikie Sherrill has been elected the governor of New Jersey, defeating Republican Jack Ciattarelli.

Sherrill is the first woman governor of New Jersey in 25 years and the first democratic woman to hold the governor’s office.

On election night, Sherrill was declared the winner roughly 90 minutes after the polls closed, maintaining a comfortable lead throughout the night.

Sherrill's strongest performance was in Essex County, where she beat Ciattarelli by over 76 percent.

Ciattarelli's strongest county was Ocean County, where he accumulated over 67 percent of the vote, but it was not enough to secure his victory.
