Prop 50 Approved In California, Opposed In Mother Lode

Proposition 50, a statewide Congressional redistricting measure, was approved in California with just under 64% of voters saying yes and slightly over 36% saying no.

Governor Gavin Newsom pushed the measure, which allows for the temporary redistricting of Congressional maps for the elections in 2026, 2028, and 2030, to boost Democratic Congressional seats.

In Tuolumne County, just over 60% voted no, and in Calaveras County, over 62% said no, with the state map showing support from more Democratic leaning coastal communities and opposition in the more conservative inland areas.

Governor Gavin Newsom proposed the measure in response to redistricting actions in Texas to increase Republican seats.

The results show a divide between the state's Democratic leaning coastal communities and the more conservative inland areas.

Author's summary: California approves Prop 50 with 64% yes votes.
