Metro Manila has raised its disaster alert status to Red effective 5 p.m. Friday, as Super Typhoon Uwan rapidly intensifies toward a possible Signal No. 4 impact on Luzon. Officials mobilized personnel, rescue equipment, and heavy machinery across the capital region to prepare for severe weather conditions.
The Metro Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MMDRRMC), led by Metropolitan Manila Development Authority Chairman Romando Artes, declared the region on its highest operational alert level. The storm is expected to bring winds extending up to 720 kilometers and heavy rains starting Sunday afternoon through Tuesday.
“This is our highest state of readiness,” said Office of Civil Defense-NCR Director George F. Keyser during the MMDRRMC emergency meeting.
“We are not ruling out Signal No. 4 in the NCR as the volume of rain could be unprecedented, even if the eye makes landfall far north,” he added.
Authorities cautioned that even under a Signal No. 3 storm warning, the rainfall volume could still pose serious risks to low-lying communities.
Metro Manila declared a red alert as Typhoon Uwan approached, prompting full-scale rescue readiness, inter-agency coordination, and warnings of record-breaking rainfall over the coming days.
