Jesper Bratt scored on a breakaway just 1:33 into overtime, lifting the New Jersey Devils to a 4-3 victory against the Montreal Canadiens at Prudential Center on Thursday night. New Jersey rallied after Timo Meier tied the game with 1:07 left in regulation.
Bratt contributed a goal and an assist, while Jack Hughes added two assists for the Devils (10-4-0), who remain unbeaten at home this season (6-0-0). Goaltender Jacob Markstrom made 16 saves.
"I just tried to read the goalie's movement and felt like I came in with a lot of speed," Bratt said. "I felt comfortable enough to make him think I’d do one thing and then react to what he was doing."
With this win, the Devils became the first team in the league to reach 10 victories this season.
"It's nice to get 10 wins, but we want to keep building our game," said Timo Meier. "We know what we’re trying to achieve daily to improve and push each other. This game offered a good lesson."
For Montreal, Noah Dobson registered two assists, and Jakub Dobes stopped 24 shots. The Canadiens (9-3-2) had previously won all five games that extended into overtime this season. Dobes began the year with six straight wins, posting a 1.97 goals-against average and a .930 save percentage.
The 24-year-old rookie was emotional after the game, taking responsibility for the defeat during postgame interviews.
New Jersey staged a late comeback capped by Jesper Bratt’s overtime heroics to stay perfect at home and secure their 10th win of the season.
