As reports point to looming sellout agreement between Canada Post and CUPW, what way forward for postal workers?

Prime Minister Mark Carney has emphasized that his Liberal government sees the dismantling of Canada Post in its current form as a testing ground for broader attacks on the working class across Canada.

Daniel Berkley, a postal worker and leading member of the Postal Workers Rank-and-File Committee (PWRFC), urges postal employees to connect with the committee for independent organization and collective resistance. Interested workers can contact the PWRFC at [email protected].

According to several media reports, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) is reportedly nearing a concessionary deal with Canada Post that would impose drastic cuts to jobs and working conditions.

Union Mediation and Government Involvement

Bargaining resumed on Monday, November 3. CUPW released a statement appreciating the efforts of a government-appointed mediator and expressed the union leadership’s readiness to “resolve differences between the parties” and “reach ratifiable collective agreements at the bargaining table.”

“We ask the government to ensure that any decisions affecting postal operations are made with Union input.”

Meanwhile, the pro-business Liberal government continues to support a restructuring plan that could eliminate two-thirds of Canada Post’s 55,000 workers.

Author’s Summary

The Liberal government and CUPW leadership appear ready to compromise workers’ interests, risking mass job losses while framing the Canada Post struggle as a test case for wider labor attacks.
