Telstar's boys soccer team claimed the eight-player South regional championship with a thrilling 1-0 double-overtime victory against Pine Tree Academy on Thursday at Gardiner Area High School.
Under intense pressure, Cyrus Mills found the space he needed at the top of the 18-yard box while closely guarded by a Pine Tree defender. He calmly struck a low shot that slipped past Pine Tree goalie Colby Solberg, who made 12 saves.
“I waited to beat him, I guess,” Mills said. “He was playing great defense on me, and I just had to wait.”
Mills added that targeting the low area caught the goalie off guard.
With this win, the undefeated Rebels (16-0-1) advance to face another unbeaten opponent, Piscataquis (17-0), in the state final at Brewer High School on Saturday.
“He’s the talisman of the team,” said Rebels coach Nic Conrad. “He’s the calm guy, he doesn’t really need a spotlight, just the ball at his feet... He made that shot count when he had to, and it was amazing.”
