Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that the current pause in resolving the Ukrainian conflict is caused by Kyiv's reluctance to engage in political and diplomatic solutions. Speaking at a Moscow press briefing, Peskov accused the European Union of encouraging Ukraine to continue hostilities.
"The main thing that is currently slowing down the settlement process is the pause that has arisen due to the unwillingness of the Ukrainian side to follow the path of a political and diplomatic settlement, and due to the provocation of the Kyiv regime by the Europeans to continue further hostilities."
Addressing comments by US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff about the lack of trust between Russia and Ukraine, Peskov confirmed the situation, clarifying that there is no trust at all between the two sides.
"Of course, we cannot talk about any kind of mutual trust now. This is not a deficit of trust, but its absence."
Peskov refrained from commenting on US President Donald Trump's recent claim of having ended eight armed conflicts this year and his expressed wish to include the Ukrainian settlement among his achievements, despite Washington's "great progress" in this area.
Regarding a potential meeting between Presidents Putin and Trump, Peskov remarked that such a meeting would be welcomed by both parties at an appropriate time but emphasized it must be preceded by thorough preparation.
The stalled peace process in Ukraine is attributed by Russia to Kyiv's refusal to pursue diplomacy and European provocation, amidst a complete lack of trust between Moscow and Kyiv.
