Gavin Brindley scored just 1:08 into overtime, giving the Colorado Avalanche a 5-4 win over the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday night in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Nathan MacKinnon led the Avalanche with two goals and three assists, moving to the top of the NHL scoring chart. Artturi Lehkonen also found the net twice, while Valeri Nichushkin and Cale Makar each contributed two assists. Goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood made 29 saves as Colorado recorded its third straight win, stretching its point streak to seven games (5-0-2).
For the Canucks, Linus Karlsson, Kiefer Sherwood, Drew O'Connor, and Jake DeBrusk provided the scoring, with Kevin Lankinen finishing the night with 27 saves.
In the extra frame, Brindley netted the game-winner after following up his own rebound. MacKinnon assisted on the play before leaving the ice, completing a five-point performance that brought his season total to 29 points, the highest in the league.
Earlier, DeBrusk tied the game 4-4 with a power-play goal at 3:01 remaining, tipping a shot from Brock Boeser past Blackwood. Lehkonen had earlier given Colorado a 3-2 advantage just 28 seconds into the third period, redirecting a pass from Brent Burns. O'Connor then leveled it with a shorthanded strike at 7:26, but Lehkonen’s rebound goal at 9:47 restored the Avalanche’s lead before Vancouver’s late equalizer forced overtime.
“It was a tough game all the way through, but we kept pushing and got rewarded in the end,” said Brindley after the victory.
