Customers have been advised to return certain tomato sauces to stores for a full refund following a serious safety alert. First and Last Bakery, LLC, based in Connecticut, has recalled three of its tomato-based pasta sauces due to potential contamination with Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium that can cause deadly food poisoning.
No illnesses have been reported to date. However, because botulism poses a severe health threat, customers are strongly urged not to consume the affected products and to return them for a full refund.
“Clostridium botulinum bacteria can cause life-threatening paralysis by attacking the nervous system,” according to the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA).
The FDA stated that the sauces were produced without sufficient process evaluation to prevent bacterial formation, as reported by the Independent.
Botulism is a rare but potentially fatal illness caused by toxins produced by Clostridium botulinum. These toxins may develop when canned or acidified foods are not processed correctly, allowing the bacteria to multiply.
First and Last Bakery has recalled three pasta sauces in the northeastern US after FDA concerns over botulism risk linked to unsafe processing methods.
