I Used to Be an Anti-Hunter. Now I Take My Daughter Hunting with Me

My Journey from Anti-Hunter to Hunter

My first impression of hunting was a disturbing one, watching maggots crawl out of a small buck's eyes as it lay in a friend's backyard in central Wyoming when I was just 3 or 4 years old.

This experience, along with my family not being hunters, shaped my initial perception of hunting. Even in college, when my boyfriend shared with me over instant chat that he had shot a deer, I reacted negatively, calling him a "Bambi killer" and slamming my laptop closed.

I understood, on some level, the hypocrisy. But I couldn't understand why he wanted to kill something, or how someone I loved could find joy in taking a life.

This journey from being an anti-hunter to becoming a bird and big-game hunter, and now teaching my daughter about hunting, has been a transformative experience with its own set of lessons.

Author's summary: A personal journey of transformation from anti-hunter to hunter.
