So far this season, just over one-third of eligible two- and three-year-olds in England have received a flu vaccination, according to NHS England (NHSE) data.
Approximately 2.3 million flu vaccines have been administered to eligible children, with only 400,000—33.4%—being two- and three-year-olds. To improve access, NHSE has expanded vaccine availability to nearly 4,000 local pharmacies on a one-season trial, as well as locations in supermarkets and high streets.
Parents are urged to submit their child’s vaccination consent forms to schools or to book vaccination appointments for two- and three-year-olds to help protect against flu before the Christmas holidays.
According to the UK Health Security Agency’s latest surveillance data, "this year’s flu season is off to an unusually early start."
NHSE cautions this could lead to a "long and drawn-out winter" for the health system, as flu cases are currently three times higher than the same period last year.
Summary: NHS England warns of an early, severe flu season while only a third of eligible toddlers have received vaccinations, urging parents to act promptly to protect children.
