A Wet Winter Won't Dampen Rideau Canal Skateway Plans

The National Capital Commission (NCC) confirms it is ready to manage the predicted warmer, wetter winter season affecting the Rideau Canal Skateway.

Winter Weather Outlook for Ottawa

Ottawa could receive between five and 15 cm of snow on Sunday, marking the season's first official snowfall. However, this snow may not remain throughout the winter. Typically, Ottawa experiences its first snowfall in late October, but the late arrival this year may indicate future trends.

The Farmer’s Almanac 2025-2026 winter forecast predicts more precipitation across southern Quebec, including Ottawa, but with less snowfall. This suggests a wetter winter with rain and mixed precipitation reducing snow accumulation.

Temperature and Seasonal Impact

Environment Canada expects temperatures to be slightly above seasonal averages, though cold spells are still anticipated in December and early January.

Winter conditions are becoming more erratic, challenging winter events such as Winterlude and the Rideau Canal Skateway.

NCC’s Commitment to the Skateway

“Every year, we work diligently under challenging conditions to produce enough high-quality ice that is suitable and safe for mass use,” said Maryam El-Akhrass, NCC spokesperson, in an email to CityNews.

The NCC remains proud of its efforts to maintain the skateway season after season, prepared to adapt to varying winter conditions.

Summary: Despite warmer, wetter winters and unpredictable weather, the NCC is committed to ensuring the Rideau Canal Skateway remains safe and accessible each season.
