The Hungarian government has announced a concession project to build a 27 km greenfield railway connecting Budapest's Liszt Ferenc International Airport with the city centre.
Minister of Construction & Transport János Lázár revealed at an October 27 press conference that the new line will allow trains to travel up to 160 km/h. It will branch off the Budapest–Cegléd main line southeast of Pestszentlőrinc, pass through the airport via a 2 to 3 km tunnel with an underground station, and continue southeast to rejoin the main line at Monor.
Máté Lóga, State Secretary of the Ministry of Economy and Chairman of Budapest Airport's Board of Directors, told local media: “The concessionaire is expected to cover the estimated €1 billion cost primarily from ticket revenues.”
He anticipates the fare to be competitive, targeting a price around HUF 3,000 to HUF 4,000, comparable to current alternative transport options.
This project aims to create an efficient, modern rail connection between Budapest airport and the city, leveraging a long-term concession to ensure operational and financial viability.
