'Sex offender' mistakenly freed from Wandsworth prison identified

A man accidentally released from the high-security HMP Wandsworth in London has been identified as 24-year-old Brahim Kaddour-Cherif. He was mistakenly freed on October 29 and remains at large.

Kaddour-Cherif had recently appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court in September for failing to comply with sex offender requirements. Officials confirmed he was serving time for trespass with intent to steal, though he had prior sexual offence convictions.

The Metropolitan Police said the man is of Algerian descent and that urgent efforts are underway to locate and return him to custody.

“We are carrying out urgent enquiries to locate him and return him to custody,” said the Metropolitan Police.

Political reaction

Dr Rosena Allin-Khan, Labour MP for Tooting, expressed outrage at the situation, highlighting public safety concerns given the man’s record.

“Local residents will quite rightly be deeply concerned. We urgently need answers from the Government and Ministry of Justice as to how this was allowed to happen,” she told the Mirror.

The incident follows another case involving 38-year-old Hadush Kebatu, a convicted sex offender who was mistakenly released from HMP Chelmsford in Essex. Kebatu was later apprehended three days later in a north London park after attempting to travel to the capital.

Police photographs showed the Ethiopian national being escorted away by plain-clothed officers near Finsbury Park on October 26.
