TV presenter and podcaster Vogue Williams recently opened up on her show about a common parental challenge — helping her children with homework, especially maths.
Vogue, mum to Theodore, six, Gigi, four, and Otto, three, confessed that evenings at home often turn into learning sessions for both her and her kids.
“I'm back at school though because of the kids. So I'm like relearning with them for their homework. I can do Gigi's homework alright. It's Theodore's I'm struggling with a bit. I'm not even joking.”
Her honest admission struck a chord with other parents who shared their own stories of homework mishaps and challenges.
“I realised, the hard way, that I had taught my four-year-old the wrong way to spell,” said Kelly, a mum-of-one. “She brought home phonics and was teaching me!”
“I didn't have a clue,” admitted Jayne. “My 12-year-old was struggling with his maths and I was neither use nor ornament.”
Many parents agree that Year One maths seems simple until you try explaining it. What once seemed obvious now involves multiple strategies and unfamiliar terms that leave many adults baffled.
Vogue’s co-host, comedian Joanne McNally, sympathised with her friend’s struggle and recalled something she'd recently seen online.
“We don't talk enough about the trauma of a parent sitting with their child trying to teach them maths,” she said.
Vogue Williams humorously highlights how modern homework challenges blur the line between teaching and learning for today’s parents.
